Verse: I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Devotion: It’s easy during a political season like this to draw lines. Good guys on one side, bad guys on the other. But, whether or not someone’s political ideals line up with ours does not exclude them from our prayer list. Scripture “urges” us, to not just pray for all people but to also give thanks for them. When is the last time you prayed a prayer of thanksgiving for a political leader across the isle? Why would you? Because it pleases God, our Savior.
Prayer: God, today we cover our whole nation in prayer. We pray for those who agree with us, those who don’t, and even those who are actively working against us. We do it with thanksgiving and grateful hearts because we know it pleases You. May the prayers of the righteous lead this nation into a knowledge of the truth. Amen
